Beer is definitely a top thing in Prague, but it will make you a bit tired after having few glasses. What about to explore places serving drinks which will make you come alive…Let´s talk about coffee. Quality of coffee places in Prague vary a lot and sometimes it is really a hard nut to find a nice place with great coffee, nice staff and authentic genius loci. Please find bellow my tips on places I love in Prague. My favourite off the beaten path cafés.

KAVÁRNA NOVÝ SVĚT: SMALL COZY CAFÉ CLOSE TO PRAGUE CASTLE

This is a hidden oasis close to Prague Castle, out of overpriced restaurants and all the tourist traps. In tiny alley, in picturesque quarter “Nový svět” you will find this cozy spot where you can rest over great coffee in family owned place.

Feel like home atmosphere, absolutely different from what you can experiece just 5 minutes away in the hard core touristy area of Prague Castle. You can either sit inside or on balcony with a view into the the garden which is hosting several sculptures.

Sidelight: Nice washrooms, historical rocking horse, delicious rose lemonade, free bottle of tap water (it is quite rare in Prague).

TRICAFE: DELICIOUS COFFEE FROM LIVING ROOM

This café is well hidden from all the main touristy routes yet pretty much downtown close to Charles bridge so you can easily reach it on your way around Prague sights. It is very relaxed place with cozy “a la gradma livingroom” interiour, with usually just very few people around. They brew great coffee and make yummy home made cakes. Unique place.

Forget about all the commercial cafés with no atmosphere and concept idea. This place is cute, cozy and smells nice. Don´t expect large space, rather something like a little apartment in a groundfloor. Before leaving the café, don´t forget to mark your nationality at their counter, there is a big blackboard for that:-)

My tip: From their windows you can also see cool sculpture created by David Černý, called Embryo. Embryo and several other great sculptures from this artist you can see on my Unknown Downtown Tour (2,5 h walk).

CAFÉ LETKA: DON´T FORGET CAMERA AND BOOK

I love this place because it is so different! Very cozy, photogenic, with good vibes, friendly stuff, delicious coffee and yummy snacks. The interiour is amazing, very rustic, austere yet well designed and authentic. Once you enter this new local coffee place with large windows, you will be impressed by its wall. They are scraped off to the former paint layer. Besides the smell of coffee, you can sense the feeling of history here as there used to be a café already in 1896!! Meanwhile it served as a tailor´s shop or pub.

They have also perfect (= late) opening hours so in the evening this place turns into a bar. You will find Café Letka in a cool/hipster neighbourhood called Letná.

My tip: Local menu is fantastic – delicious breakfasts, microbrewery beer, wines and coffee from Berlin based roasters Five Elephant. Cakes are a piece of art. The place is also very quite and suitable for reading or for work.
